The New Entrepreneurs Foundation (NEF) kicked of its 2017/18 Speaker Series on Thursday 5th October with Sahar Hashemi OBE, founder of Coffee Republic. Moderated by Oli Barrett MBE, co-founder of StartUp Britain, who shared his own valuable perspectives, guests also heard from Gabriela Hersham, co-Founder of HuckleTree. Taking the format of a panel discussion with a Q&A session; early stage and aspiring entrepreneurs quizzed the panellists on effective growth strategies and managing the evolving challenge of running a business as it moves from agile startup to established company.
Sahar Hashemi OBE
Founder of Coffee Republic
Sahar Hashemi OBE founded Coffee Republic, the UK’s first US style coffee bar chain, built it into one of the UK’s most recognised high street brands. Today Coffee Republic has 110 bars, a turnover of £30m and is one of the main players in the coffee revolution that transformed the UK high street.
A serial entrepreneur, Sahar also founded Skinny Candy, a boutique confectionery brand. In 2011 she was invited to join the Entrepreneurs’ Forum set up by UK Business Secretary Vince Cable, in order to share her perspective and give advice to the government on enterprise policies.
Sahar is also the author of two books on entrepreneurship, Switched On and Anyone Can Do It, which reached number one in the Amazon Books business chart. In June 2012 Sahar was awarded an OBE for services to the UK economy and to charity.
Co-Founder & CEO of HuckleTree
Gabriela Hersham is the Co-Founder & CEO at Huckletree, accelerating the growth of startups and scaleups in the UK and Ireland. A business graduate of Regent’s University in London, Gabriela spent a few years studying acting and filmmaking in New York where is first encountered the concept of co-working in 2012. She returned to the UK in 2013 founding HuckleTree in Clerkenwell with a total investment of over £7 million, raised from 3 funding rounds. The business has since opened co-working hubs in Shoreditch and Dublin.
Co-Founder StartUp Britain
Oli Barrett MBE co-founded StartUp Britain, Tenner, social innovation agency Cospa and Speed network the Globe. Oli is a regular MC and speaker at international events. He has led eleven trade missions to the US, India and Brazil helping British companies (in health, clean-tech and web) to explore business opportunities. Oli’s entrepreneurial career started as a student and has included an events business in nine cities, an international language practice website (sold in 2008) and a sock subscription website which continues to ship internationally.
