Akademi presents an evening of new contemporary and classical South Asian Dance commissions. This eclectic mixed bill showcases both eastern and western genres of dance. One half of the evening is packed with classical Indian dance, from the intricate footwork of kathak to the sculpturesque composition of kuchipudi. The other half combines dance techniques including western contemporary, bharatantayam and kathak.

The show is the culmination of two development programmes created by Akademi to promote South Asian dance.

Utkarsh is an annual classical Indian dance choreographic development opportunity that supports two South Asian dance artists from the UK. This year’s artists are Arunima Kumar and Urja Desai Thakore.

Choreogata is an open application choreographic commission for dance makers with a professional background in a classical South Asian dance style, giving them the opportunity to create new contemporary work. Artists Kamala Devam and Subhash Viman received the £5,000 commission this year.

Akademi presents Choreogata & Utkarsh, 4th September 2015 (7.45pm – 9pm), Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southank Centre, Belevedere Road, London SE1 8AXX. Admission: Free. You can book your FREE ticket by clicking the here.
